DISTANCE TO HORIZON CALCULATOR

Horizon Line of Sight Calculator

Input your height above sea level, and it will calculate the distance to the horizon using the formula:

Distance to Horizon

To calculate the distance to the horizon, use the formula:

d = √(r + h²) - r²

Where ( r ) is the Earth’s radius (approximately 6,371,000 meters) and ( h ) is the height above sea level.

Simple Line of Sight calculation, purely to show the effects of the curvature of the earth at sea level

An average height person eye level, say 1.6M looking out to sea, the line of sight horizon would be just 4.52 km (2.81 miles) away

Bear in mind this is a simple calculation based on sea level and assumes the Earth is a perfectly smooth sphere whilst in reality its full of contours hills, mountains, valleys trees and buildings. It is however good to be aware of the effects of the curvature of the earth for line of sight communications using high frequency Radio Transmission such as Microwave and ISM (industrial, scientific, and medical) bands like LoRa & Meshtastic. good to show the effects of getting an Antenna higher
